Turn on any news channel in India now a days and its infesting with disease of creating an 'issue' out of 'non-issue' which is forced down on the common people making them believe that someone's individual notion has become the notion of entire country just because they have access to voice their opinion on national media.
Take for example, remark of Indian celebrity saying 'I felt like a raped woman"! It has caused so much uproar and reactions that people forget that while he made that comment, a group of so called journalist were sitting right in front of him and they all laughed on the remark.
I am in no shape or form defending or supporting what he said.
The isn't about him.
He is just an actor doing his job. Go watch his movies and come home. Why give so much importance to him other than this?
This is about people who are trying to portray how much sensitive they are towards the burning problem in India.
Rise of Rape Culture and our casual acceptance towards it.
This is what Maharashtra State Women's Commission member said about Nirbhaya " Did Nirbhaya really have to go to watch a movie at 11 pm in the night with her friend?" I want to make it clear that person who made this comment is a woman.
There is a long list of prominent people of our society blaming the women for the rape. But today's blog is not about that.
I just want to ask these pseudo-bleeding hearts, whether its celebrities, politicians, National Commission of Women or media house pandits and all those who react to such comments that instead of wasting their time and energy over someone's remarks why don't they do something about the real issues.
Here's some shocking statistics. According to National Crime Record Bureau, in 2015, on average 92 women got raped, sexually assaulted or both every single day. That's 1 women approximately every 15 minutes. That's last years figures. According to current census this number is going to rise. According to a private study. India is labelled as one of the most dangerous country for women after Iraq and Afghanistan.
The documentary about Nirbhaya 'India's daughter' was banned just because politicians and law-makers were too busy worrying about how it would create bad image of India in the world. But if they genuinely wanted to change India's image they should do something to keep our daughters, sisters and mothers safe and India's image would improve by default.
We all came to streets, showed our outrage after Nirbhaya incident. They held public debates. Passed some more laws. But you know what difference has it created since then?
Only one thing.
Now there is a category to describe brutal violent sexual assault. Yes. Media now calls such incident as "Nirbhaya-like rape". Her ordeal has become category. Nothing else is changed.
I am going to quote something about punishment for rapist from an ancient book. I am specifically calling it ancient book because if I name it then there are some people who instead of focusing on issue at hand would find religion in it.
"Those who rape or molest women or incite them into adultery should be given harshest punishment that creates fear among others to even think of such a crime."
In India, we give punishment, most often its not harshest and most definitely we fail to create the most important reason to give such punishment. i.e. to create fear among others to even think of such a crime. Hence, we fail to protect women of our country.
But to talk about these issues, daily, asking government why rape incidents in India keeps rising? Why are we giving sewing machines to rapists instead of castrating them? Well, it won't create a glamorous media cycle. It won't help their private agendas. It will only help women of our country. But who actually wants to do that? right?
